Ideas

Of late, i've been inspired by new ideas and things i wanna do or see happen.. after prompting from a friend and mentor, i've decided to jot some down here:

Singapore Education

1) Cross cultural training in secondary schools as part of curriculum esp with the increase of internationals in Singapore to allow for better integration of the youth and prepare for the increasingly globalised world

2) Life Skills Training  - skills to help students better relate to parents, friends and also the ability to learn to make choices for themselves with long term consequences in mind, starting from primary school

Personal

1) Social Enterprise Cafe

Inspired by the local social enterprise cafe Food For Thought.. i'd like to start a cafe as a social enterprise where the profits will go into giving out scholarships for students who do not qualify for any bursary or other scholarships because while family finances may reflect that they don't qualify, family circumstances do not give them access to the money they need to focus on studies (Sec and tertiary). Also, it will hire international students in SG so they can earn some pocket money for themselves during the holidays and breaks when they don't have allowances while providing a healthy working and learning environment. This would also be an affordable and conducive place where student life groups can take place for the hour that they need ( i share from personal experience n exasperation!).

This cafe will fulfill my dream of running a cafe, education, the idea that no one should be denied oppprtunity for the best education that they are capable of because of financial issues, ST employment for international students, providing a conducive and affordable place for student small group bible study and contributing to social causes all at the same time!

2) A library that stocks up Christian books
For some reason, up to date and even older Christian books are so expensive.. that students and perhaps many other pp cannot afford it. Mabbe in the same cafe i can have a library corner

3) Cross Cultural Consultancy

Was inspired by this consulting company that conducts crosscultural training for corporations that have a international staff to promote better team building and relationships. I realised i really do have a love for learning about new cultures and people from those cultures and to discover and appreciate the differences between them and promote understanding. I just love it! I thought that was a really cool consulting firm that they focused on doing that. Would be cool if one day i could be part of such a training!

Retail Issues
1) Online Ordering for Donut Store
I keep wondering why the Donut store that has super long queues at the basement of Raffles City doesn't just create and online ordering system so pp could order online up to a certain quota each day. This way, they would know how much to prepare each day and the pp can save time from queuing up and the company can also cater to more walk ins. O well, mabbe they have some other rationale for that

Ministry
1) Program Outline for Christmas Parties in LGs

Drafting a program outline that would give LG leaders suggestions on what to do for activities during the Christmas parties they throw at home for the LG and the friends they invite. This will also include a brief sharing of the Word or perhaps other materials that will help them to explain the true meaning behind Christmas

Okies.. i can't remember the rest now so will leave it as it is for now. Will write more if and when other ideas pop up!'

Oh! i remember one more that i'd thought about for Christmas this year.. but since then it has been "stolen" and modified by SOME people, just as i am doing with some of the ideas here

1) Christmas dollar for dollar match
Instead of exchanging regular gifts this year for Xmas, i wanted to set up an online giving system where by my friends could choose to give amounts between $2 or whatever amount they want to give and i'd match dollar for dollar for that. Except this money will be given to organisations like World Vision or the LIFE scholarship fund in VCF. This way, the money gets to bless others and since i have pretty much what i need and want for myself, i reduce unnecessary gifts and at the same time, use the same Christmas shopping money to give it to others that may need it more than i do.

unfortunately, i think it was too late for me set this up.. so i decided i shall do it next year.

  1. o yes..i am also amazed at the great business strategy that kushin bo japanese restaurant in Suntec city has. they give a 10% discount for guests that are able to finish their food within an hour during lunch! it gives such great incentives for lunch time crowd to finish early and leave and helps improve their turnover rate.

  4. These are amazing, Ate Ivy! I love the cafe idea, especially when integrated with the Christian library concept! I had been thinking of opening a cafe (just thinking because I don't even drink coffee so I don't think I'd make a good cafe owner, haha) where small groups can go, and there's books and Bibles and stuff... Haha.

I'm still wondering what to do FOR Singapore when I get there. Because I know what I'll be doing IN Singapore that will essentially be for my country (like study, work with Filipino communities, etc) but I'm asking God right now what He wants me to do to give back to the Singaporean community. Maybe when I get there I'll sit down with you for a long time about it! :) Haha.

I miss you all and I hope to see you in the (our) summer (March or April)!

  6. I'm hoping to study International Studies in NUS... Wayne was also telling me to try out for the LKY School of Public Policy but I think I'm more inclined towards Int'l Studies. I plan to apply for an ASEAN graduate scholarship...

I'm moving to Singapore before the end of 2008! Woohoo!!! =)

  8. i love the cafe idea. if you ever make it reality or need help doing so, i'm so there and i'll do what i can.

combine that with a secondhand bookstore or 'library/rental store' of christian materials and you'll have *my* dream cafe. :)
